How subjects help
- Geography: Read maps, weather and river levels to choose a safe route for the day.
- Biology: Point out plants and animals to guests and know which ones could be dangerous.
- Physical Education: Stay strong enough to paddle, climb and carry gear all day in the wild.
- First Aid: Treat a twisted ankle, a bee sting or cold shock far from the nearest hospital.
A famous name
Eddie Bauer: Seattle outdoorsman who opened his shop in 1920 and patented the Skyliner, America's first patented down jacket.
Try it yourself: Train one skill for five days
- Pick a skill you can count in 30 seconds: keepy-uppies, skips, catches against a wall.
- Do a first test and write down your score.
- Practise for five minutes a day for five days.
- Test again. How much did you improve, and which day was the jump?
Coaches and athletes measure, practise and re-test; small daily practice beats one huge session.
Also try: Make a home fire-escape plan.
