How subjects help
- Physical Education: Train skills, speed and stamina every day and learn the rules and tactics of your sport.
- Biology: Understand how muscles grow and why rest days help your body get stronger.
- Psychology: Stay calm and focused under pressure when a whole stadium is watching you.
- Nutrition: Eat the right mix of food and water to fuel training and recover after competing.
A famous name
Roger Federer: Swiss tennis player who won 20 Grand Slam singles titles, including a record eight Wimbledon men's titles.
Try it yourself: Train one skill for five days
- Pick a skill you can count in 30 seconds: keepy-uppies, skips, catches against a wall.
- Do a first test and write down your score.
- Practise for five minutes a day for five days.
- Test again. How much did you improve, and which day was the jump?
Coaches and athletes measure, practise and re-test; small daily practice beats one huge session.
Also try: Be the referee.
