Ski Patrol / Avalanche Rescue
Ensures skier safety on mountains — responds to injuries, manages avalanche risks, and conducts rescues.
Did you know?
Speed is everything in avalanche rescue: about 92% of buried people survive if found within 15 minutes, but only 30% after 35 minutes.
How subjects help
- Physical Education: Ski steep slopes in any weather while towing an injured skier on a rescue sled.
- First Aid: Splint a broken leg in the snow and keep a hurt skier warm until help arrives.
- Geography: Study snow layers and slope angles to judge where an avalanche might break loose.
A famous name
Charles Minot Dole: Founded the US National Ski Patrol in 1938 and led it until 1950.
Try it yourself: Make a home fire-escape plan
- With an adult, draw a plan of your home and mark every door and window.
- Find two ways out of every room.
- Choose a safe meeting place outside, like a neighbour's gate.
- Talk it through together so everyone knows the plan.
- Remember the rule: if there is a fire, get out, stay out, and call the emergency number from outside. Never go back in for anything.
Firefighters and emergency planners know that a plan made in advance is what keeps people safe.
Also try: Train one skill for five days.
