How subjects help

A famous name

Galen: Around 157 AD, as doctor to gladiators in Pergamon, he treated athletes' injuries — early sports medicine.

Try it yourself: Plan a game everyone can play

  1. Plan a 20-minute playground game for ten children of different ages, including someone who uses a wheelchair.
  2. Start with a gentle five-minute warm-up that everyone can do.
  3. Write the rules and check each one: could everyone join in? Change any rule that leaves someone out.
  4. Add a safety check: what space and equipment do you need, and how will you cool down at the end?

Recreation managers and athletic trainers plan activities that are fun, safe and open to everyone, with warm-ups that help prevent injuries.

Also try: Pack a match-day lunch.
