Some of America's first paramedics were Black residents of Pittsburgh, trained in 1967 by the Freedom House Ambulance Service.
How subjects help
- Biology: Quickly judge if someone's heart, lungs or brain are in danger at an accident scene.
- Chemistry: Give emergency medicines such as pain relief safely in the back of an ambulance.
- First Aid: Do chest compressions, stop heavy bleeding and keep an airway open under pressure.
- Physical Education: Stay fit enough to carry patients on stretchers down stairs and over rough ground.
A famous name
Dominique Jean Larrey: French army surgeon who created 'flying ambulances' in the 1790s and treated the wounded by urgency.
Try it yourself: Make a home fire-escape plan
- With an adult, draw a plan of your home and mark every door and window.
- Find two ways out of every room.
- Choose a safe meeting place outside, like a neighbour's gate.
- Talk it through together so everyone knows the plan.
- Remember the rule: if there is a fire, get out, stay out, and call the emergency number from outside. Never go back in for anything.
Firefighters and emergency planners know that a plan made in advance is what keeps people safe.
Also try: Take your pulse like a nurse.
