Coast Guard Officer
Protects maritime borders, conducts search and rescue at sea, and enforces maritime law.
Did you know?
The US Coast Guard traces its roots to 1790, when Congress, on Alexander Hamilton's advice, created a service of ten ships to enforce customs laws.
How subjects help
- Geography: Use tides, currents and winds to predict where a person lost at sea may have drifted.
- Law: Board and inspect boats to check safety gear, fishing limits and what cargo they carry.
- Physical Education: Swim in rough, cold water and haul a survivor into a rescue boat.
- First Aid: Warm up someone with hypothermia and care for them on a rocking boat back to shore.
A famous name
Dorothy C. Stratton: Became the first woman commissioned as a US Coast Guard officer in 1942 and led its women's reserve, the SPARS.
Try it yourself: Make a home fire-escape plan
- With an adult, draw a plan of your home and mark every door and window.
- Find two ways out of every room.
- Choose a safe meeting place outside, like a neighbour's gate.
- Talk it through together so everyone knows the plan.
- Remember the rule: if there is a fire, get out, stay out, and call the emergency number from outside. Never go back in for anything.
Firefighters and emergency planners know that a plan made in advance is what keeps people safe.
Also try: Argue both sides of a rule.
