Your kidneys filter about 150 quarts (around 140 litres) of blood every day, yet only 1 to 2 quarts of it becomes urine.
How subjects help
- Biology: Understand how kidneys filter blood and make urine, and what goes wrong in infections.
- Chemistry: Test urine to find out what a kidney stone is made of and how to prevent more.
- Anatomy: Guide a tiny camera through the urinary tract to find blockages and growths.
- Physics: Use focused shock waves to break a kidney stone into pieces small enough to pass.
A famous name
Hugh H. Young: Called the father of modern urology; led the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins from 1915.
Try it yourself: Train steady hands like a surgeon
- Put cereal in one bowl and an empty bowl a hand's length away. Move pieces one at a time with the chopsticks for one minute and count them.
- Try again with your other hand and compare the two scores.
- Lay the strings across the table a little apart and put the banana on top. Practise tying a knot over the banana with the first string.
- Time how many knots you can tie in one minute, then try to beat your score.
Surgeons practise knots and fine tool control for years, often timed on training boxes, before they stitch up a real patient.
