Podiatrist
Specializes in foot and ankle health — treats everything from bunions to sports injuries.
Did you know?
Each human foot has 26 bones, so your two feet hold about a quarter of all the bones in your body.
How subjects help
- Biology: Spot foot problems caused by diabetes, like slow healing sores, before they get worse.
- Anatomy: Know the many small bones and tendons in the foot to find the cause of pain.
- Chemistry: Choose treatments that clear fungal nail infections and soften thick, hard skin.
- Physics: Study how weight presses through the foot when walking to design supportive insoles.
A famous name
William Scholl: Foot doctor who founded the Dr. Scholl's foot-care brand and a podiatry college in Chicago.
Try it yourself: Read your footprint like a foot expert
- Take off one shoe and sock, dip your foot in the water and take a normal step onto the first sheet of paper.
- Quickly draw round the wet print with the marker before it dries.
- Look at the middle of the print: a wide middle means a low arch, a thin strip means a high arch, and a clear curve means an average arch.
- Do the same with your other foot on the second sheet and compare the two shapes. Dry your feet straight away, and never walk around with wet feet.
Podiatrists and physiotherapists study the shape and pressure of footprints to spot problems and design insoles or exercises.
