- Geography: Decide where new homes, parks and shops should go based on the land and rivers.
- Mathematics: Work out how many schools and buses a growing neighbourhood will need.
- Sociology: Ask residents what they need so a new plan works for everyone who lives there.
- Environmental Science: Plan trees, parks and drainage that cool the streets and stop flooding.

Daniel Burnham: Co-wrote the 1909 Plan of Chicago, a landmark in modern city planning.
Try it yourself: Draw your room to scale
- Measure the length and width of your room, then the big furniture.
- Choose a scale, like 1 square for every 10 centimetres.
- Draw the room and furniture using your scale.
- Plan a new layout on paper. Would the bed really fit by the window?
