How subjects help
- Biology: Identify tree species and spot pests or fungus that could kill a whole stand of trees.
- Environmental Science: Plan which trees to fell and replant so the forest keeps storing carbon and sheltering wildlife.
- Geography: Read maps and slopes to plan forest roads, fire breaks and walking trails.
- Mathematics: Measure tree heights and trunk widths to estimate how much timber a forest holds.

Gifford Pinchot: Trained forester who became the first chief of the US Forest Service in 1905.
Try it yourself: Watch a bean wake up
- Line the jar with damp kitchen paper and push the bean between the paper and the glass.
- Keep the paper damp (not flooded) and the jar somewhere light.
- Check every day and draw what you see. Does the root or the shoot come first?
- Turn the jar on its side once the root appears. What does the root do next?
Farmers and plant scientists watch germination closely: a strong root first means a healthy crop later.
