Recreation Manager
Plans and manages leisure facilities and programs — parks, sports centers, community activities.
Did you know?
New York's Central Park had an estimated 42 million visits in 2016, making it the most visited city park in the United States.
How subjects help
- Business Studies: Set budgets and prices for swimming lessons and clubs so the centre pays its way.
- Physical Education: Plan sports sessions that suit toddlers, teenagers and older adults alike.
- Communication: Advertise events and listen to what local people want from their parks and pools.
- Environmental Science: Look after park trails, ponds and wildlife so visitors don't damage nature.
A famous name
Stephen Mather: First director of the US National Park Service (1917–1929), managing parks for public enjoyment.
Try it yourself: Plan a game everyone can play
- Plan a 20-minute playground game for ten children of different ages, including someone who uses a wheelchair.
- Start with a gentle five-minute warm-up that everyone can do.
- Write the rules and check each one: could everyone join in? Change any rule that leaves someone out.
- Add a safety check: what space and equipment do you need, and how will you cool down at the end?
Recreation managers and athletic trainers plan activities that are fun, safe and open to everyone, with warm-ups that help prevent injuries.
Also try: Train one skill for five days.
