How subjects help
- Art & Design: Frame a shot so the eye goes straight to the subject and the background stays tidy.
- Physics: Control how much light reaches the camera by changing shutter speed and lens opening.
- Computer Science: Edit and colour correct photos on a computer and keep thousands of files organised.
- Communication: Direct nervous people in front of the camera so they relax and look natural.

Dorothea Lange: American photographer whose 1936 photo 'Migrant Mother' showed the hardship of the Great Depression.
Try it yourself: Photograph one object three ways
- Take (or draw) a close-up where the object fills the whole frame.
- Now take a wide picture that shows where the object is.
- Now take one from very low or very high.
- Show all three to someone. What story does each picture tell?
Photographers choose framing, angle and light on purpose, because the same object can tell very different stories.
