- Mathematics: Draw floor plans to scale and work out room areas, stair heights and window sizes.
- Physics: Understand how wind, weight and heat push on a building so it stays standing and comfortable.
- Art & Design: Sketch how a building will look and feel, from its outline to the light in each room.
- History: Study old buildings in a neighbourhood so a new design fits in or restores what was there.

Try it yourself: Draw your room to scale
- Measure the length and width of your room, then the big furniture.
- Choose a scale, like 1 square for every 10 centimetres.
- Draw the room and furniture using your scale.
- Plan a new layout on paper. Would the bed really fit by the window?
Carpenters, electricians, architects and interior designers measure twice and plan on paper before anything moves.
