Structural Engineer
Ensures buildings and structures can withstand forces like wind, earthquakes, and gravity.
Did you know?
The Burj Khalifa sways about 1.5 metres at the top in the wind, by design, not by accident.
How subjects help
- Mathematics: Calculate how much each beam and column bends under the weight it carries.
- Physics: Work out how strong winds and earthquakes push and shake a tall building.
- Engineering: Choose steel, concrete or timber and size each part so a building stays standing safely.
- Geography: Check local earthquake, wind and flood risks so a building suits the place it stands.
A famous name
Fazlur Rahman Khan: Bangladeshi-American structural engineer who designed Chicago's Sears (Willis) Tower and 'tube' skyscraper frames.
Try it yourself: Build a paper bridge
- Put the books about a ruler apart and lay one flat sheet across the gap.
- Add coins to the middle one at a time. How many before it sags to the table?
- Now fold a new sheet into a zigzag (like a fan) or roll it into tubes, and test again.
- Which shape held the most? Can you beat your record with one more idea?
Engineers and builders do the same loop for real: build, load it, find the weak spot, improve the shape.
Also try: Make a broom-handle pulley.
