Pediatrician
Provides medical care specifically for infants, children, and adolescents.
Did you know?
Children are not just "small adults" medically: their bodies absorb, process and get rid of medicines differently from grown-ups.
How subjects help
- Biology: Check that a child is growing and developing on track from baby to teenager.
- Chemistry: Adjust medicine doses for small bodies that process drugs differently from adults.
- Psychology: Put a nervous child at ease and notice signs of learning or behaviour difficulties.
- Communication: Explain an illness in simple words to a child and clearly to their worried parents.
A famous name
Benjamin Spock: Paediatrician whose 1946 book "Baby and Child Care" became one of the 20th century's best-sellers.
Try it yourself: Take your pulse like a nurse
- Put two fingers (not your thumb) on the inside of your wrist, below your thumb, until you feel a beat.
- Count the beats for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4. That is your resting heart rate per minute.
- If you can, do 20 star jumps, then count again straight away.
- Check every minute until it is back to where it started. How long did it take?
Nurses, doctors and paramedics take a pulse all day: it is one of the quickest ways to tell how a body is coping.
Also try: Catch a falling ruler.
