How subjects help
- History: Date a manuscript by recognising the handwriting styles of different eras.
- Languages: Read old scripts and early forms of languages that are no longer spoken.
- Art & Design: Study the letter shapes, decorations and gold leaf in hand painted manuscripts.
- Chemistry: Use knowledge of old inks and parchment to judge how old a document is.

Jean Mabillon: French monk who founded palaeography, the study of old handwriting, with his 1681 book De re diplomatica.
Try it yourself: Write a museum label for an old object
- Choose the object and look at it closely: what is it made of, and what marks of use does it have?
- Ask an older family member what they remember about it, or about things like it.
- Write a short museum label: what it is, roughly when it is from, who used it, and why it matters.
- Keep it under 50 words. What did you have to leave out?
