Longevity Scientist
Researches how to slow, stop, or reverse aging — pushing the boundaries of human lifespan.
Did you know?
A species of jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii) is biologically immortal — it can revert to its juvenile form
How subjects help
- Biology: Study why cells wear out with age, using short lived creatures like worms and mice.
- Chemistry: Test substances that might slow the damage that builds up inside ageing cells.
- Mathematics: Analyse data from long studies to see which habits are linked to a healthier old age.
A famous name
Cynthia Kenyon: Showed in 1993 that changing a single gene could double the lifespan of tiny worms.
Try it yourself: Invent a way to sort leaves
- Lay out your collection and look closely at every one. (Do not pick berries or mushrooms, and wash your hands afterwards.)
- Split them into two groups using one question, like "smooth edge or jagged edge?"
- Keep splitting each group with a new question until every item is on its own.
- Give your key to someone else. Can they use your questions to find the same item?
Scientists sort living things this way. A good key lets anyone identify a species just by answering questions.
Also try: Pick the best growing conditions.
